The Taiwan MOFA fully funded fellowship 2026

The Taiwan MOFA fully funded Fellowship 2026, initiated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of Taiwan, offers a prestigious research opportunity for international scholars and experts focusing on Taiwan studies, cross-strait relations, Asia-Pacific regional affairs, and Sinology. This highly competitive Taiwan research fellowship allows researchers to conduct advanced academic research at top Taiwanese universities and research institutions. This fellowship has supported over 1,500 scholars from 93 countries to date. Furthermore, in alignment with the APEC Scholarship Initiative, the program annually allocates 12 exclusive Chinese Taipei APEC Fellowship positions specifically for researchers from developing APEC member economies. Typically, the fellowship opens every year during May and June; consequently, selected scholars begin their fellowship in January of the following year.

Main Eligibility

Eligible recipients include foreign professors, associate professors, assistant professors, post-doctoral researchers, doctoral candidates, and doctoral program students from relevant departments at overseas universities, as well as research fellows holding equivalent positions at international academic institutions.

Fellowship Benefits Overview

This fellowship offers many benefits, including the following.

  • Monthly Stipend:
    • Professors, associate professors, and senior researchers will get an amount of NT$60,000.
    • Assistant professors, postdocs, PhD candidates, and other eligible applicants will get an amount of NT$50,000 for
  • Airfare Subsidy:
    • One round-trip economy-class ticket on the most direct route to Taiwan
    • Reimbursed based on region, up to NT$35,000–NT$90,000, as per Taiwanese MOFA regulations
  • Research Duration:
    • Minimum 3 months, maximum 12 months
  • Group Insurance Coverage:
    • Amount of NT$1 million offered for medical and NT$50,000 offered for accidental injuries.

How to apply for this Fellowship

Applicants must:

  1. Submit an online application on the official Taiwan MOFA Fellowship portal.
  2. All candidates send the following documents to the nearest Taiwan (ROC) Embassy or Representative Office for initial review:
    • Completed application form
    • Resume/CV with a publication list
    • 3-page research proposal (standard academic format)
    • Two recommendation letters, or one recommendation and one letter of consent from the applicant’s institutional head.

Selection Evaluation Process

  • The Representative Office of Taiwan (ROC) Embassy in your country reviews applications, verifies documents, and assesses the applicant’s academic impact or potential.
  • The Office provides a recommendation statement for the evaluation committee.
  • MOFA forms an expert evaluation committee comprising scholars, specialists, and MOFA representatives to screen candidates.
  • Selected applicants must submit a Letter of Consent for Research from one or more academic institutions in Taiwan to finalise their application.

Fellowship Terms and Conditions

  • No Research Changes Without Approval: The proposed research topic and area cannot be changed without prior MOFA approval.
  • Final Research Report: Recipients must submit a 20-page written report to CCS within 3 months after the Fellowship ends and participate in MOFA-organised academic events during their stay.
  • No Double Funding or Part-Time Work: Fellows cannot accept other Taiwan-based scholarships or part-time jobs without MOFA’s consent.
  • Legal Compliance: Fellows must obey ROC laws; serious misconduct or criminal violations will lead to fellowship termination.
  • Additional Costs: Any expenses beyond the fellowship support must be self-funded.
  • Acknowledgement: All research outputs must credit the Taiwan Fellowship.
  • Research Logistics: Fellows are responsible for arranging their research and must submit a travel plan and host institution details to the nearest ROC Embassy or Representative Office before departure.
  • Visa Information:
    • Visitor Visa for fellowships under 6 months
    • Residence Visa for fellowships over 6 months
    • Visa fees waived, labelled “FR–Taiwan Fellowship Recipient”
